Challenges for Data Migration: According to the latest forecasts released by IDC, in 2021, 90% of companies will use cloud storage and management services. However, it is a market that is still maturing, so many of the companies that are already in the cloud are considering taking a step back to return to the more traditional model of local data centers.
And it is that although rural, the jump to the cloud and data migration are not always so easy. A reality that Infinidat, the provider of business storage solutions, has wanted to highlight with the creation of a small list that identifies the four great challenges that companies face when migrating data to the cloud. Thus, although other challenges could still arise, currently the most determining factors are:
Hidden Costs
A common headache for CIOs is, for example, moving from one cloud provider to another. Or moving from a cloud environment to a local environment. Suppliers apply penalties (an “exit tax” or egress tax) for deleting the data, which ends up increasing costs to unaffordable limits.
Some companies have decided to adopt a multi-cloud strategy. But this, again, adds complexity and increases costs, making data repatriation even more difficult.
Storage Consumption and Acquisition
Another challenge, which also translates into costs. If scaling infrastructure requires acquiring, installing, and configuring new hardware, getting enough resiliency to compete can take months.
Irrespective of whether the data resides in a public or private cloud, businesses need the flexibility to choose between different cost-effective formulas, either based on consumption, or scaling as requirements grow or fall, or with a flat monthly fee.
Data Sovereignty
On the other hand, aspects such as data sovereignty continue to be a key concern (especially in certain sectors such as banking, healthcare, or public services.) Since it is almost impossible to maintain complete control of the data once it is in the cloud.
Besides, the new privacy legislation requires companies to control where their data resides and who has access to it. And, again, more costs to add to the budget.
Provider Dependency
An essential section, relevant especially when the organization has a large data migration application to the cloud. Since it prevents taking advantage of the price competitiveness that exists between the different offers.
Furthermore, public cloud providers impose multiple billing mechanisms based on various criteria (capacity requirements, data repatriation, protection requirements …) And it is not easy to predict costs in advance and accurately.
